The apostles experienced a significant change in Acts 1 and 2. They transitioned from hearing the audible voice of Jesus to listening to Him internally as the Holy Spirit. But how does this happen? Are Jesus and the Holy Spirit the same?

The answer is: Yes!

More Evidence that Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit Are One

In John 14:15-16, Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would come and “will never leave” us. In verse 23, He stated that He and His Father would come to those who keep His word and make their home with them. In verses 18-20, He reassured us, saying, “No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live. When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.”

Similarly, 1 Corinthians 3:16 tells us that we are God’s temple and that His Spirit dwells in us. Jesus confirms His promise in John 14:15-16 by sending the Holy Spirit to live within us.

Why Is It Essential to Know They Are One?

If Jesus is God in the flesh and the Holy Spirit is God dwelling within us, it follows that they share the same essence, speak the same language, and convey the same message. John 14:26 tells us that the Holy Spirit will remind us of everything that Jesus said.

Knowing the words that Jesus spoke helped the disciples recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit; they identified it as similar to Jesus’ voice. Imagine their reactions the first time they heard the Holy Spirit speak to them. Were they shocked, confused, or comforted? Likely all of the above.

They were amazed and confused by a voice and words that sounded so similar to those of their teacher over the previous three years. They were also comforted for the same reason.

This is why we must continually remind ourselves that the Holy Spirit will never speak anything outside of God’s Word. His teachings and instructions are based on the words previously spoken to His people, which is why He inspired the creation of the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16).

He understood that we would need a reference; the Trinity needed a way to back each other up and cross-reference since They always speak in agreement. They are always aligned and never contradictory. Whenever we are unsure if an instruction is from the Lord, we should ask the Holy Spirit for confirmation, and He will provide it through His Word. You can ask, “What is the reference verse for this instruction, Lord? How can I know it’s you?”

Additionally, His instructions come with peace, even when they are challenging to accept.

To grow in your ability to recognize the voice of God, combine prayer—specifically praying in the Spirit often and for extended periods—with the study of the Word, worship, and frequent fasting to suppress the flesh.
